It may come as no surprise that Porsche is best known for their achievements in the world of motorsports. But over the last several decades, Porsche has become a fixture in popular culture with appearances in some of the most beloved movies of all time, from Top Gun to Bad Boys and beyond. This June, Porsche made its way to the silver screen once again in one of the summer’s biggest blockbusters as the character “Mirage” in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts.
Featuring the legendary Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8(964) that transforms into Mirage, one of the newly introduced Autobots. Mirage joins Optimus Prime and others to fight the forces of evil in the battle for Earth. With the movie set in 1994, and the character of Mirage being tough with a rebellious streak and a good heart, the filmmakers couldn’t have picked a better model.

You may have a better chance of running into an actual Transformer than seeing a 911 Carrera RS 3.8. That’s because only 55 were ever produced. Of course, being that rare none of the original models were used during filming. So how did it end up on screen? They used body doubles. Five picture cars were built that look exactly like the 964 on the outside but are not actually original Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.8 models. During filming, each one of the picture cars fulfilled a particular function. One car was modified to go backward at higher speeds; another was specifically prepared for stunt sequences, and another one was controlled outside the driver’s cab for scenes that focus on the artist inside. However, a real 911 Carrera RS 3.8 was used on set in order to capture the authentic sound of the engine.

This fall, Porsche is bringing some of that movie magic to Monterey California for Rennsport Reunion 7. Join us for a special screening of Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, then stick around for your chance to meet one of the stars of the film. Mirage will be in attendance, in both Autobot and car form, to interact and take pictures with festival goers to make it a truly unforgettable experience. Join us September 28 – October 1 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca for Rennsport Reunion 7.
